Port Elizabeth Harbour

The harbour reflects little sense of place and identity. It is an Industrial wasteland, disturbing its immediate natural and built environment, thus leading to a separation of the foreshore. However there is a potential to create a public waterfront environment and to reintegrate the foreshore with the city.

GOAL:
To gain a clear understanding of the harbour in terms of:
Historic development
Functions
Problems and opportunities created
In order to identify a feasible future spatial development framework.
STRATEGIES:

Creating a public edge by freeing up the land for development and removing industrial functions.
Maximising pedestrian activity at the water edge by creating a promenade with links to existing pedestrianised spaces.
Pedestrian: pedestrian dominant spaces by pinching to slow down traffic to promote cross permeability.
Vehicular: Carry major arterials through into the harbour and create public entry points where possible without obstructing private harbour functions.
Public transport: formalizing public transport stops at major gateway spaces to maximise accessibility
Connecting/linking all above functions with a main activity spine and where they converge create a gateway with highest density functions

Linking the natural spaces together (Baakens river- natural place, driftsands- natural protected area)
Using structural planting (green) to link the natural spaces to create a green continuity.
Relocate the manganese and oil functions to Coega and remove contaminated land.
Create forecourt spaces to emphasize placemaking due to historical presence.
Linking historical places by pedestrian and vehicular movement/flow
Korsten Port Elizabeth

Densifying the very complicated urban structure of Korsten in Port Elizabeth and promoting a 'green' urban renewal
through the extension of the green
continuities to form a self-sufficient
green system within the area.
